Thymosin α-1 (Tα1) is a naturally occurring 28-amino-acid peptide originally isolated from the thymus. It acts as an immune-modulating, enhancing and restoring agent, stimulating both innate and adaptive immunity. Endogenously produced in the thymus, Tα1 promotes differentiation and maturation of T-cell progenitors, activates dendritic and natural killer cells, and enhances cytokine-mediated inflammation. Synthetic Tα1 (thymalfasin) is approved in several countries to augment immune responses and has been used to enhance vaccine efficacy and support studies of viral infections, immune deficiencies and cancers.
